Single Review: Two Pennies
Two Pennies: Henry Marten's Ghost By Roisin Phillips - 21/06/06
A haunting folk song from one of the most original traditional groups in the industry.
Henry Marten’s Ghost have made a name for themselves recording original ballads like “Two Pennies” and
fans won’t be disappointed by this latest
offering.
The track is just one on a five-track EP that again showcases the group’s unique interpretative style.
HMG’s frontman, Padraig Lawlor, is again writing songs that are steeped in his Belfast roots. “Two Pennies” tells the poignant story of a little boy who watched as his father sailed away on the ill-fated Titanic.
What’s good about it?
Lawlor’s voice is very special and contributes significantly to the emotion of the track.
What’s bad about it?
Maybe a little too different.
Verdict:
Certainly worth listening to. Available by emailing henrymarten@aol.com or phoning 01269 594713
Interview
When the
low-budget Irish
film Adam & Paul
launched in Ireland it
was greeted with
much critical acclaim
and praise. Now about
to be launched in the UK
on DVD, its director Lenny Abrahamson spoke to
Mary McNulty about this
and future projects.
ublin-born Lenny Abrahamson studied physics followed by philosophy at TCD where he won a foundation scholarship. He graduated in 1991 with first class honours, but it was his love and passion for film that was to shape his future.
After graduating, he directed a short film, ‘3 Joes’, which won the Best European Short Film award at the Cork Film Festival and the Organiser’s Award at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival. After a period of post-graduate study in philosophy at Stanford University in California he returned home, “I must be one of the few people who left California to pursue a film career in Ireland”. Since then he has directed commercials for television in Ireland, the UK and worldwide; the best known probably being Carlsberg ‘Flatmates’ and ‘Nightclub’.
“‘Adam & Paul’ was my first feature film, and it was an extremely positive experience from start to finish. We got funding quickly, the cast were brilliant and it was seen by a lot of audiences,” says Lenny.
